ET BYKVARTER I BEVÆGELSE

Når man ser Sankt Kjelds Plads fra luften ses en tydelig bystruktur med flere veje der går ud fra pladsen i radialer. Fire af dem leder ud til kvarterets fire hjørner, hvor S-banen og den kommende metro forbinder bydelen med resten af byen.

Men bydelens naturlige centrum har ikke de kvaliteter, der skal til for at skabe et levende offentligt rum. Derfor vil Københavns Kommune, som en del af områdefornyelsen i Skt. Kjelds Kvarter, gøre det lettere og mere oplevelsesrigt at bevæge sig til fods og på cykel i kvarteret, samt skabe bedre forbindelser til de to S-stationer og de to kommende Metrostationer i kvarteret, ved at afprøve nye typer af offentlige rum.

Der ønskes forslag til en strategi for udvikling af en fælles identitet så Skt. Kjelds Plads sammen med radialgaderne opleves som den gode genvej for bløde trafikanter samtidig med at de mange små pladser i højere grad inviterer til leg, ophold og bevægelse for kvarterets beboere. Desuden ønskes forslag til, hvordan bebyggelsen omkring Skt. Kjelds Plads kan udformes og omdannes så den styrker og understreger pladsens fysiske og identitetsmæssige status som kvarterets centrum.

A CITY DISTRICT IN MOTION

Looking at Sankt Kjelds Square from the air one sees a clear urban structure with several streets that depart from the square in a radial pattern. Four of them lead to the four corners of the district where the S-train and a future metro will connect the district with the rest of the city.

The districts natural centre has, however, not the qualities required to create a livable public space. With the urban renewal project of Sankt Kjelds District the municipality, want to focus on making it easier and more enjoyable to walk or cycle within the district as well as creating better links between Sankt Kjelds Plads and the two S-train stations and two future Metro stations, by testing new types of public spaces.

Entrants must propose a strategy for the development of a common identity so that Sankt Kjelds Square and the adjacent areas will be experienced as the good short cut for the more vulnerable road users and at the same time turn the many small spaces and squares into attractive spaces for playing, sitting and moving for the local inhabitants

Finally proposals must consider  how parts of the build environment around Sankt Kjelds Square can be reshaped and transformed  in order to strengthen and underline the square as the clear physical heart of the district embodying its identity.
